Dr. Zhang Qiang, popularly known as Dr. Smile, received his medical degree from the Department of Clinical Medicine at Zhejiang Medical University, later receiving his Master’s degree in Vascular Surgery from Shanghai Second Medical University. From 1997 to 1998, Dr. Zhang trained in the United States at the Loma Linda Medical Center Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program. Throughout his career, he has continuously engaged in technical exchanges around the world, including programs in the United States, Japan, Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia.
Dr. Zhang is a renowned Vascular Surgeon, and has helped tens of thousands of patients treat vascular disease. He started his surgical career in the General Surgery Department of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital at Zhejiang University. In 1995, he helped to establish Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, and was responsible for the formation of the Vascular Surgery Department. In 2002, he helped found Zhejiang University’s Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Vascular Surgery, as Director of the university’s Third Affiliated Hospital. In 2004, he helped to found Hangzhou Surgery Center as its Director, and in 2007, he helped
found the Vascular Surgery Department of East Hospital Affiliated at Tongji University. In 2010, he established the Hayward Medical Center, serving as their Chief of Vascular Surgery. In January 2013, he joined with the Shanghai World Path International Clinic as their Chief Vascular Surgeon. In October 2013, Dr. Zhang signed with Beijing United Family Hospital and Clinics,
establishing a vascular team, offering international-standard venous thromboembolism (VTE) treatment and outpatient surgery for varicose veins.
Dr. Zhang specializes in minimally invasive surgery and treatment of peripheral vascular disease (PVD). He has two national patents on two medical devices he designed, and utilizes and pioneers the use of minimally-invasive techniques in vascular surgery. He has published articles in such publications as the Asian Journal of Surgery and Chinese Journal of Surgery. He has published over 50 papers in international and Chinese magazines. In addition to serving as editor of several medical journals and medical organization boards, he also serves on the Shanghai Bureau of Justice for Patient Disputes.
